Tired of being homebound in this Free country because of this $5/gallon rage. And the auto industry are dragging their feet to make affordable, safer, higher fuel economy automobiles. As a poor working professional this is intolerable. How can we stand up against such supply & demand to survive?

First disclose what kind of vehicle your currently driving and its fuel economy- a 20 year old 30mpg GM compact based on Opel for me. Previous VW diesel Rabbit got 45+mpg but was hard starting in winter- but for $50.00 dollars summer driving was enough. Americans shouldn’t ‘demand’ anything of American manufacturers- they should just buy the available alternatives and tell manufacturers why. Political demands that make sense would be for Mexican VW Beetles be allowed into US without having extra pollution, etc. equipment required. Consider a moped/scooter that gets 75 mpg- I have fixed up a little Yamaha for a student that gets that- doesn’t do more than 30 mph, legal restriction. Supply and demand works- the supply of cheap, simple cars is out there, buy them, the demand will persuade American Manufacturers to make them. Saturn’s may become the sales leader. . .

Buy a car that offers the kind of mileage you bring up in your question. And most likely it will be a car made in Japan or Korea. Up to 2004 70% of Ford’s sales consisted of trucks and SUVs. If they go under, too bad. They constantly told us through their commercials we would be less of a human being unless we drove a big gas guzzling SUV or truck. Now their sales of the big rigs account for only 30 % of total sales. And once again, the auto makers from Japan and Korea are poised to dominate new car sales. Auto companies and the consumer did not learn the lessons of the 1970’s. I remember the oil embargo, gas rationing, and the 55 mph speed limits.
I will continue to ride my 38 mpg motorcycle and will be looking at a new car this summer or fall that will offer high gas mileage. And it will not be an American car.
PS, as soon as it EVER warms up here in Chicago land, I will be riding my 650 dual sport that will go over 50 miles on a gallon of gas.

Buy a Honda Civic. Many (all?) of them are made in Ohio.
Other than that, well, just stop buying US-made cars until they start selling fuel-efficient models. If the manufacturers die because of it, it isn’t because no one told them what they needed to do to survive. It is because they actively refused.

I really think the only way is to get Bush out of office and really work hard to get somebody in who has about half a brain for a change.
Obama promises to take on the big questions – I sure hope he’s serious about that because what we have now is intolerable!
We just threw 8 full years down the drain with Bush – even McCain was admitting that. Lord, what a horrible waste republicans are!

With extremely high gas prices straining consumers pockets in recent months, it is only natural for people to wonder where all the money they pay at the pump goes..Source:http://fuel-savermagnetic.blogspot.com
